Locks, latches and windows: the security rental standards
External doors that lock, windows that latch. The rental standards that most often fail on a quick look.
In short: Security standards are simple to check and simple to fix, which makes them frustrating to fail.
External doors
Each external entry door must be lockable with a key from outside. Doors must close and latch.
Strike plates
A door that does not latch usually has a strike plate out of alignment. A quick adjustment fixes it.
Windows
External windows that open must have a latch. Windows that will not close or lock fail.
Sealants
Perished sealant around windows and wet areas is not a security item, but we note it because it lets moisture in.
Fixing before listing
Most security items are a locksmith or handyman visit.
